The origin of Indian cinema dates back to 7th of July, 1896. For the first time in India, cinema was shown in this year. First Indian movie was ‘Raja Harishchandra’ made by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913 whereas first Indian movie with sound was ‘Alam Ara’, released in 1931. Since then, Hindi cinema has never looked back.
Watching Hindi movies is passion and hobby of millions of Indian population. In the initial phase of Hindi movies, the colors used in film making were black and white. But, the arrival of colors in late 50s completely transformed the Indian movie industry. Its popularity soared and people were mesmerized with this new technical innovation.
Hindi movies have been made in all genres. The initial phase was mainly centered around social subjects. Later on, that gave way to historical and religious movies. That was followed by melodrama and musicals in 1950s and 60s. During this phase, several musical blockbusters made infinite mark in the history of Hindi cinema. Then again, 1970s saw, arrival of action genre. This completely got people hooked to Hindi movies. The epitome of success in this genre was movie ‘Sholay’, the highest grosser Hindi cinema. Sholay also brought a new landmark in Indian movie industry and that was launch of 70mm movies.
By the early 1990s, Hindi movies had come full circle and this phenomenon was witnessed in numerous new family dramas and comedy movies. Romantic movies were also very popular. Movies like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Apke hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and many others had people on their feet. Later on, famous old movies were remade, giving them the contemporary feel. Hindi movies also witnessed a new generation of movie-goers who were more into small budget, experimental movies. Arrival of multiplexes helped in popularizing various genres of Hindi movies.
Hindi cinema is very popular in almost all parts of the world especially; Middle east, erstwhile Soviet Russia, Pakistan, Australia, UK and even Japan. Movies like Lagaan, Monsoon Weeding and few others helped Hindi cinema in getting its due recognition from western world.
Hindi movies have also come of age with advent of new technologies and more creative set ups. There are various websites where people can watch and download Hindi movies in free.
